Spring 1997 - Cincinnati to Yukon

Day 100 - Whitehorse, Yukon
9 July 1997 (nice; no rain; breezy head winds; mileage = 44.8) -- X - We
got up and left as usual. We had a nice ride along the lake that starts the
Yukon. We stopped to admire the Yukon when we got to the bridge that
crosses it. It's very blue-green. We rode into White Horse on a road with
heavy construction. It was very difficult riding. When we did make it to
town, we went to a camping store (bought nothing), bike shop #1 (for
deraileur = Jockey pulleys), bike shop #2 (brake cable and hanger real
cheap), photo shop (too expensive), Canadian tires (bike tire, WD-40, cheap
pump), used book store (A bought 2 books), grocery store (lots of goodies
including Haagen Dazs CCC!). We were then looking for a place to eat the
ice cream. We stopped at the Stern Wheeler Ship and tried to eat it, but it
was too hard. While we were there, an Italian rode up and chatted with us.
He had just ridden the Canol Highway, which looks like a real suck. We
went back to the campground at the east end of town and set up camp next to
the absent Swiss camp. We are also near the Italian. This is a tent-only
place and quite extraordinary. I did some work on the bikes (fixed my
Jockey pulleys and rerouted April's rear brake). We cooked concurrently
with the Swiss. Susan made us garlic bread on the open fire with real
garlic. Delicious. After dinner, we chatted until late. It's midnight now
and I can still read this with natural light! We met some strange, but
friendly, native Natives today, too. No mosquitoes at camp and wonderful
weather. Very nice.
