Day 98 - Teslin Lake, Yukon
7 July 1997 (rain; quite cool; mileage = 0) -- X - Rest day! We woke up to
rain. It had rained all night, sometimes very hard. I was tired and wanted
a rest day "ohne Mosquitos". The Swiss don't like riding in the rain, so
they slept in as well. When we did get up, the Swiss were heading to the
lodge for breakfast. We got ready and followed. Since camping here is free,
we decided to give the lodge some business. They had an all-you-can-eat
blueberry pancakes deal that we all had and it was very satisfactory. We
then came back down to hang out and relax in the rain in the tents. April
and I did some strategic planning. In the afternoon, HP was servicing his
bike and I watched that hoping to learn some things (and I did). While he
did this, I read German phrases from his grammar book to him, so he could
help me with my pronunciation. Then we all made dinner (us -- mac and
cheese and rice stuff; them -- sauce on spaghetti). We talked to them for a
while and had them mark their route on our little map. Now we are back in
the tent, since the mosquitos are present. They aren't bad, but the rain
has helped them come out. April is practicing knot tying. Overall, a very
nice and relaxing day. A - I finished the Yogi book finally! And napped a
bit in between final chapters. It was a nice lazy day. A shame it rained so
much, but then maybe that helped us not feel guilty for not riding. Our
chains will be a nightmare to ride on now, but we have a week to get to
Skagway, per the new plan -- I think we could do that walking, so we should
be able to get the bikes there as well.
