Day 86 - M. of N. (60km from Ft. Nelson), B.C.

25 June 1997 (foggy, then sunny; rain for a few minutes while we were making pancakes; mileage = 73.3) -- A - We got hit up for $7 last night AFTER 10 PM! There were no showers -- just pit toilets thick with mosquitoes! What a suck. AND we were in the only site that had enough grass to put the tent on and could barely get the stakes in the ground at that. So anyway, we woke up to FOG everywhere. We got up at 6, I think, and went for breakfast across the street since we probably wouldn't get far enough to eat again. We split a huge, yummy breakfast and left around 8. There were supposed to be some marvelous views of the Rockys, but we saw fog. It was pretty easy riding though -- nice weather. If we'd known how easy of a ride it would be, we could have done this (to Prophet River) yesterday -- although we would have gotten rained on. Oh well. We rested in Ft. Mosquito for several hours, had pancakes, had some rain and watched millions of mosquitoes on the netting. We left there and went 16 km to the everything store for this "town." Chris inquired about camping -- $5 to put up the tent and $3 each for showers. We weren't too tired yet, so we moved on. We hoped it would be easy riding, so we could get to Ft. Nelson and a shower. First thing out was an 8 km climb with a beautiful behind-view of the valley. The rest was amazingly flat really, but with a head wind. It wasn't tough by any means, but it wasn't the "easy" we needed to make it the whole way. We found an ideal place 40 miles from Ft. Nelson. There were 2 big tractor-lawn mower machines parked in a clearing on the left. There was more ground cleared behind the trees and a huge clearing, I guess a field, beyond for quite a way. We decided to make it as simple as possible. No fly, no sleeping bag, no pillows. This worked until the sun went "down." I was freezing and had to get the sleeping bag (and let in bunches of mosquitoes). It was 35 degrees when we started riding. Brr! There was dew all over the tent. Chris had put the food on a tractor and it clanged all night, so he didn't sleep much, thinking it was a bear. I didn't care! X - Some stupid bird made noises and flew around our tent for HOURS! Late at night.
