Day 85 - Buckinghorse P.P., B.C.
24 June 1997 (cloudy; light head wind to keep mosquitoes away! mileage =
33.6) -- X - (*Picture-full page -- The Mosquito Situation with captions) A
- The Swiss team left early while we were still in our tent. We went and
took showers (only paid $2 since we shared campsite) and packed up with
amazing clouds of mosquitoes. We decided not to attempt the 2-day assault
on Ft. Nelson as the Swiss have planned. We'll do it in 3 days. However,
the "towns" between here and there are gas, restaurant and camp/hotel.
Apparently, oil crews have a lot to do with their business also. The places
have some groceries, but not much and it's all VERY expensive! We saw a
gallon of distilled water for $5 today -- WOW! Anyway, realizing that we
are going to have very long stretches is rather disturbing. I seem to be
too weak of a rider to do the mileage each day that would make this
worthwhile, so the "plan" may be changed to aim for the lower part of
Alaska and take the ferry down to Victoria. Chris could then plan a winter
adventure that would challenge him minus the mosquitoes, RVs, rain, heat
and slow companion. This is fine with me, because we are getting to see the
mountains now and that's really neat. I don't have any goals that need to
be met. I'm enjoying the scenery as much as I can watch it, but I'm proud
of what I've already done, even if it's nothing compared to the Swiss!
The mosquitoes suck and to think they'll get worse in Alaska (as we're
told) is frightening! Lunch -- restaurant; not great. Snack -- junk food;
Pikinny campground after 9% grade descent to river = fun! Dinner --
restaurant across from camp -- yummy!
