Day 78 - Valley View, Alberta
17 June 1997 (mileage 58.1) -- A - We had MUCH easier riding today! It was
much less hilly, but the important part was the lack of wind. It was an
amazing difference. I had a flat that timed itself perfectly by happening
right before a pullover area. The tire had a staple in it. The hole was
easy to spot in the tube, so Chris had it fixed in no time flat! We saw a
couple of critters today -- Chris saw a dog in the woods that seemed to be
wild. Then we saw what we thought was a coyote, but Chris has thoughts that
it may be a timber wolf. I saw a dead critter I believed to be a moose
(female) but it could have been a mule deer also. Chris collected a license
plate (Alberta for Al's birthday) yesterday and a flammable carrier # sign
today. He saw lots of large hoof prints on the side of the road. We met a
couple from Mass. at the rest stop just prior to Valley View. He was very
talkative and quite amusing. He's an engineer from MIT and they were in an
RV, but they had toured on Harleys previously and his wife is recovering
from an illness now. He was asking us lots of questions and invited us to
lunch in his RV but we were headed to a restaurant for a larger meal. That
wasn't so easy to pull off. We found a sports store with an air horn and
they sent us to a restaurant in the hotel. It was OK, but we were both
still hungry. Next to the bakery where she had sold out of everything good.
So now we're at the campground tucked back in a corner. We're ready for
deep woods camping again -- this is the pits! X - Yes! These "camp"grounds
are a joke.
