Spring 1997 - Cincinnati to Yukon
Journals - 11 June 1997
Day 72 - Outskirts of Edmonton, Alberta
11 June 1997 (light overcast; nice; light winds; a few drops of rain;
mileage 78.5) -- X - We got up pretty early and packed up in the usual
mosquito cloud. At our riding breaks, we about got swarmed to death. We
went a bit further and used the umbrella and net to make an instant
breakfast shelter. In Kinsella, we stopped and used the bathroom and bought
some H2O. Still very expensive, but not stupidly so. In Viking, we stopped
in a bakery and bought a chocolate cream pie. She asked how we wanted it
wrapped and was surprised to hear "We'll eat it here." Then we had more
snacks. We tried the R.C.M.P., but it wasn't open. The park and campground
wasn't to our liking either so we went to the next town, Bruce. There we
saw the R.C.M.P. car and I went in the restaurant and got him. I told him
of our incident of 6/10/97 and gave him the evidence. He was very nice and
helpful and answered our many questions very well. He had some good tactics
for bears. He had worked in the Arctic and had handled them himself. Then
we went to their park to siesta in Fort Mosquito and avoid the hot sun. The
sun wasn't out in full force for too many hours, but we were comfortably
resting/napping in the shade when it was. This is a super strategy. As we
were packing up, we felt some rain and hurried it up. It turned out to be
nothing and we went to the restaurant the cop was at. I had an omelette
sandwich and rhubarb pie. April had a big meal of hamburger patty and
veggies, potatoes. Also we had great soup. Super home-cooked stuff. Then we
hit the road for part 2. April was riding very slow. She seemed fine, but
just didn't want to stress her knees -- a good plan. I was surprised when
she had the energy for the big mileage today (and LONG saddle time). We
passed many towns and looked for a site in a field. No go there. We set out
again and I noticed people outside a farm house, Roy's Farm. Farm people
are cool and here we are.
