Day 34 - North of Ludington, MI

4 May 1997 (sunny; low 30s AM; 50-60 PM; mileage = 60.8) -- A - We woke up after a thankfully uneventful Saturday night. It took us a while to get up. My nose felt very cold and I didn't want to get out of the warm sleeping bag. Once we did, we found frost on the fly. At least the sky was clear, so we had hope of warmth before the day was out. It seemed we were making frequent stops early on and my leg was hurting right from the start. Very annoying! We happened upon a bike trail that served us very well. It's part of the park system and since they can't charge for the motor vehicle permit, they charge a trail permit fee! The trail was only about 24 miles long. Of course, no one was out looking for passes, so we were fine. We talked to an older man who has toured pretty extensively. He was interesting. He didn't seem to think Michigan drivers were any worse than anywhere else (he was born in Ohio, so shouldn't have been offended). Although he also made a comment about not running into the 1% who are idiots. Wow! Only 1% of people idiots? I think it's more like 95%! Oh well. We got to see Lake Michigan again in Ludington once we finally got there. Chris did a marvelous grocery run and we headed north to the forest to camp. Ate dinner in a churchyard, got water from a woman gardening, had an invitation to pitch our tent in a man's yard. Chris was asking "how far to the forest?" We went for the forest. Asked some more people who told us to take a little path down the street. We did and it's great! Lubed bike chains, loctited the pedals, bathed, had hot chocolate, heard deer wheeze, and are ready to brush teeth and go to sleep! Chris was writing to his mom and used my cat envelope stationery -- he made the cats be catching animals (birds, snake, etc.). Very funny and clever!
