Spring 1997 - Cincinnati to Yukon
Journals - 3 May 1997
Day 33 - Manastee N.F., MI
3 May 1997 (cold; overcast; very slight sprinkles like England!; mileage =
28.5) -- X - We got up at Chuck and Gail's at around 6:30. The rain had
stopped, but everything was wet. We said bye to Chuck, packed up and zoomed
off. We stopped shortly at a laundromat where we did laundry. Saturday was
unlucky for this, since it made it sort of crowded. Next, we headed to the
park where we were rescued. Then we checked out the Muskegon Statue Square.
Then we went to a mall since I saw they had a sporting goods store. I
bought racket grip tape for the handlebars. It worked out fine. Then we got
across their north channel and we were on our way north again. We rode and
rode and nothing seemed too spectacular. We rode past Blue Lake Fine Arts
Camp and into a boy scout camp. It was cold and windy there. We thought
about eating there, but the facilities weren't great, so we pressed on. We
got to a point where the map suggested that we would be mostly amidst
forest, but we weren't. We were on back roads of pure sand. Very hard to
ride in. We got out of that area and it was clearing up and became actually
sunny. Very soon after leaving the sandy road area, I saw a cut in the hill
that I thought would cover us from road sight. We went back there and ate
and played with different tarp configurations. Right now, I hear music,
periodic yelling, motocross bikes, gunfire, cars on pavement, planes; so
much for the forest experience. I just hope no one bothers us. Saturday
nights are the worst. Here's a real executive summary sort of anecdote: we
were struggling down the sandy road when suddenly and simultaneously a
flock of wild turkeys ran across the road and a big pickup truck appeared
on-coming. There were people in the back of the truck looking over the cab.
What would have been a neat experience was a bit marred by having to swerve
for cover in case the truck riders had guns and were going to shoot at the
turkeys. April and I both thought this. A - We have very nice baby pine
trees right by our tent. One actually in the vestibule and 2 right outside
the outer door. They are a very nice touch!
