Day 28 - Walter J. Hayes S.P., MI
28 April 1997 (sporadic wind from north; cool because of wind; mileage =
50.2) -- A - It rained a good portion of the night, but had stopped by the
time we got up. We had a short day of riding planned, so we weren't in a
hurry to leave super early. It was windy before we got up also, so less
motivation to beat the wind. We left at 7:30 and headed to Fayette where we
got some chocolate milk. Then we crossed into Michigan! The terrain
actually changed pretty quickly. We'd seen mostly big, flat farm squares
for quite a while and Michigan is relatively hilly. It's very swampy and
seems to have an abundance of dirt and gravel roads they call highways! We
stopped at a grocery and a gas station in Hudson to acquire food and a map.
We went to a "park" and checked out the map. We decided to go a little
further than planned. Saw some cute, little lakeside houses and lots of
swamps and pontoon boats. The not-all-that-impressive campground was $14.
We had a discussion about avoiding paying that much and I got upset by the
feeling that I would have to sneak around and maybe get caught doing
something wrong and not feeling like I have a right to be anywhere. Chris
was annoyed with my mopiness, but I couldn't help it. We sat at the beach
for a while and then went to the campground, got the tent up and ready in
30 minutes. Chris took a shower. I did not.
