Spring 1997 - Cincinnati to Yukon
Journals - 8 April 1997
Day 8 - Duff's, Adams County, OH
8 April 1997 (cool, but sunny and clear and nice; a bit windy still;
mileage = 8) -- X - While still lying in bed, we heard a wheezing sound and
some activity outside. I looked out and up the hill were two big deer.
Neither of them had antlers and we stared at each other for ½ minute or so,
and then while April was opening the other door to look, they ran off.
We're eating the bottom-of-bag of our food supply. It needs to be lightened
anyway. We seam-sealed the fly sheet, ground sheet, and tent. Organized
much of our gear. After packing the panniers the way we liked, we put them
in the tent and rode unladen bikes to the gas station/convenience store
(Knauff & Ashland) on 125. Bought some milk, candy, paper towels, etc.
Tried to call Dad -- talked to Sarah. Tried to call voice mail, but I
wasn't skilled enough. When we got out of the store, it was very overcast,
and we were sure it would rain. We rode back to camp. We even rode up
Duff's driveway. We then made a surprisingly good dinner of canned beef,
rice, dry tomatoes, milk, etc. It seemed to be getting cold very quickly
so we hopped into bed.
