Day 5 - Duff's, Adams County, OH
5 April 1997 (beautiful, clear, sunny day; solid rain in morning; partly
cloudy/sunny in afternoon; medium windy from SE!; mileage = 26) -- X -
Awoke to rain. Tent seemed dry inside, although outside prep wasn't
complete. We stayed in the tent late (~9:00) hoping rain would subside. We
decided we would have to pack in the rain and then ride in it. It was quite
a soggy mess, but we got everything packed despite some setbacks and
mosquitoes. We left John's house at about 10:30 in full rain armor. By
then, however, rain had weakened to almost nothing. We rode to Peebles and
A went grocery shopping and I ditched my gaiters, which made it rain for a
few minutes! We called our voice mail: Dennis, Cathi. Went to B.P. to use
the yucky restrooms. Watched Adams County tough guys smoke a joint in
their truck. Hot rod, expensive pick-ups are very popular here! We call
them "NASA trucks" or "NASA" because they go so fast. Very annoying. Into
and out of Peebles the roads were full of NASAs until we got to a more
obscure holler -- Cedar Mill. There we encountered outrageously steep
hills. I was using my 1-1 gear a lot, and A did quite well riding up most
of them with rest stops. At one point we were resting and this crusty old
van pulled up and stopped and two crusty guys right out of "Deliverance"
wanted to chat. They seemed pretty nice, so I tried to seem nice, too. Out
of that valley, we made good time on 125 with A drafting well. In the Blue
Creek (or crik) region, there was a bridge "out." I used my magic
engineering powers to determine that it could sustain 300 lbs., and we
crossed anyway. Good luck to Dennis who is supposed to visit us tomorrow.
Got to Duff's. Saw a lot of flood aftermath. Talked to Lil Fite, got H2O,
hiked up the hill. Started to dry tent and it started to rain. I had a fire
going, but we started rain proofing. The rain was a fake. The tent dried
quickly in the strong SE breeze. This also made the fire very wild. We
cooked stew and corned beef on it. Amazing how good that tastes when
you're super-hungry. Snuffed the fired and went to bed. No rain in the
evening.
