Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 15 March 1998
Day 46
15 March 1998 (Bedford [~5 miles east] by old farmhouse; mileage = 51.7)
-- X - I noticed while cooking H2O outside the room that the winds had
shifted and were now out of the east! On top of that, our Quaker oatmeal
(brown sugar and cinnamon) was terrible. We threw away the remaining
packets. We finally got rolling and right away we had pure head winds and
no shoulder -- low morale! Also, people here are not dealing with us very
well. I was so impressed in Kansas and Missouri when cars would treat us
like slow farm machinery. Now I remember why! Next, the terrain became a
bit hilly! Not like Missouri, but very annoying with all of the other
factors. We had at least 3 sets of dogs run on to the pavement. We've
stopped worrying about it. Once, I was pointing emphatically to the
endangered dog for the benefit of the driver who was about to hit him, and
I swear the driver looked at the end of my finger, just like the stupid dog
would! We stopped for snacks at a scenic overlook with profuse, pervert
graffiti. We stopped in Bedford, Indiana, for groceries and then at an ice
cream stand for a lite lunch. We then started looking for a site. We found
an abandoned house in a huge, well-mowed field. It is a magnificent house
with high ceilings, etc. There is a horse skeleton in the stable!
