Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 05 March 1998
Day 36
05 March 1998 (Lone Elm Park; mileage = 37.5) -- A - No one woke us up
during the night and we had a quick take down once we got out of the tent.
(We ate inside and each made trips to the restroom first.) The wind was a
little more north than yesterday, but still a big suck. We got to Le Roy, a
booming metropolis with one restaurant and lucked out because the food was
great. We were also lucky not to be smoked out, because they seemed to
promote smoking and every table had an ashtray with butts in it. There were
signs that said "smoking permitted" everywhere you looked. A good
experience, though, and a nice chance to warm up. No sun today and shortly
after leaving Le Roy, we had to stop for rain gear. It's freezing cold, but
just warm enough to spit rain instead of snow. We were both feeling
unenthusiastic about continuing far and started looking for a spot to hide.
Many were so close, but bad for some little reason. We stopped at one
house, and I knew someone was home, but no one would answer Chris'
persistent knocks. Further on and a man answered the door of a perfect
location, but he referred us to the park of this little-no facility (burned
out) town. It's not great, but we've had worse. We had hot drinks and ate
snacks.
