Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 04 March 1998
Day 35
04 March 1998 (rest area 5 miles north of Yates Center, Kansas; mileage =
37.8) -- X - I got to sleep pretty quickly last night, despite the
incessant dog yapping throughout the town. At 1:30 AM. we were awoken by a
bright light and a not-too-bright sheriff. "Hey, what are you guys doing?
Are you riding across country?" He might as well have asked, "Are you
sleeping?" 1:30 AM! So, then I was wide awake till 6:00. We slept in an
hour or so, then ate snacks and had a good take down. We went to McD's for
more snacks, but were out on the road at ~9:30. The big news was the wind
had changed from bad to the worst. It was coming from about 30 degrees N of
east, hard! We struggled out and I knew it would be a short day. For our
1st 30 miles, my MAX speed was 11 mph and my average was 7.8 mph. We passed
a rider we met yesterday who's riding from Wichita to somewhere else in
Kansas. His only equipment was a sleeping bag. We stopped for rest and
snacks in the leeward shelter of an old RR bridge. He passed us. When we
got going, we passed him again, walking his bike against the brutal wind.
We finally dragged into Yates Center, and I did shopping. We decided to try
going north, which was much easier, though still slow. We got to a nice
rest area and I set up the tarp for a wind block and made sausage, tomato
sauce, and provolone sandwiches. There are some cows near us. Hopefully,
none will think we left the "blow job" messages in the bathroom.
