Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati

Day 33
02 March 1998 (Wichita, Kansas [Broadway and 9th]; mileage = 63.7) -- X -
It was cold (20s) and very windy as we executed a tricky take down in the
maze of trees and branches. We finally got rolling after struggling with
the gate (with a dead coyote we noticed). On the road, it was cold and the
wind was a lot more tireless than we were. We plodded on to Kingman looking
for a place to eat. The only restaurant we found was McD's. OK. Fine. I
also got a 2-quart bottle of G-rade here to try to boost my fluid intake.
As we left, the highway's shoulder changed to unstable-unridable gravel and
dirt. Grr! We struggled north for 5 miles to get on 21st Street, which ran
the entire way to Wichita. We both felt tired and slow. We stopped at the
Cheny Reservation state park, and I had some snacks. Back to work. We
ground out excruciating mile after mile. Soon after sighting the tall
buildings of downtown, we hit massive suburbia. We rode past the zoo and
through nasty traffic to the river parks where I did some faith navigating
to find the playground I used to play at and 316 E. Pine -- where April had
a thorn flat! We were both exhausted after 6 hours! of tough riding (and
optionless), so we got a very nice room. We walked to Pizza Hut
(headquartered in Wichita) for dinner. We called Mom's and had baths and
showers. We even watched the incredibly idiotic Weather Channel for a bit.
