Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 26 February 1998
Day 29
26 February 1998 (prairie off some county road beyond Lakin, Kansas;
mileage = 60.4) -- A - We didn't get up when the alarm told us to and then
I had a flat (odometer 1,344), so we weren't off to a super early start,
but it wasn't too bad. We didn't have much wind for a couple of miles, but
when it kicked in, it was from the north and we were heading slightly south
and east, but what a strong cross wind! Our shoulder disappeared out of
Syracuse, where we ate a marginal breakfast. We had to be so careful,
because the bountiful trucks really threw us around when they passed. It
was the most dangerous I've felt we've dealt with. We finally got to Lakin
and found no apparent camping. The woman in the grocery said there was a
park several miles south, which is where the wind wanted to go. We headed
south, but our only east road came before the park, so we turned and Chris
found a dirt road and hopefully our tent blends in with this prairie land
that doesn't seem to have a purpose at the moment.
