Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 25 February 1998
Day 28
25 February 1998 (Arkansas River and U.S. 50; mileage = 84.3) -- X - We
had a good take down, despite the still strong (SW) winds. It wasn't too
cold, but the wind made it feel cold. I got my bike muddy riding past the
dogs on the property. We rode into La Junta and bought very cheap coffee
and ate our breakfast. We got going again and were pleased to find a SUPER
tail wind on Route 50. We really cranked through a bunch of miles quite
nicely. We stopped in Hasty for some snacks and rest. We cranked some more
in the warm sun with tumbleweeds following us. When we got to Lamar, the
road turned south and we had a super cross wind. We stopped at McD's for a
snack, then at the visitor center for a map of Kansas. We tried to buy new
H2O bottles, but that didn't go well. As we rode out of town with our tail
wind, an accelerating train slowly passed us. While passing, the wind
shifted about 120 degrees to become a head/cross wind from the north. Same
velocity! Wow! What a change! We stopped at the next town, ready to stop
(Grenada), but we didn't like its odd, very old RV berths in the center of
town. We moved on and found a great spot by the Arkansas River. We had
Knorr pasta and corn. Very nice. It is warm and we can hear cars/trains
(close!) and the river (also close).
