Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 23 February 1998
Day 26
23 February 1998 (Walsenburg, Colorado; mileage = 122.7 average miles) --
X - We got up OK today, but I was very annoyed that the first time we had
to set up on snow, which we packed thoroughly, the floor and T-rests were
totally soaking wet. Very uncool. We rode down to South Fork and had a
big-yummy breakfast and did voice mail. We got going and changed clothes a
bit before settling in for some long miles. The winds were erratic, but I'd
guess that on ??? day, we had 40% cross winds, 50% tail winds and 10% head.
We stopped and I bought salad and noodles in Alamagosa. Onward. We stopped
in Blanca (near Mt. Blanca) and debated an RV site there. We decided to
take advantage of our wind and move on. Nothing looked good on the climb,
so we decided to crest and go down. It was a relatively easy climb, but we
started it at mile 90 and were tired. There was a mangled semi at the pass.
We had a nerve-racking descent as it got quite dark on us. My boots were
soaked with sweat from the climb. We finally made it here in the dark, and
after a couple of prospects, checked in here. We had a good bath/shower and
we're getting things dry. We set 2 records today -- mileage together (and
April's overall P.R.) AND # of wiener dogs that chased us = 2. We were in 4
counties today, too.
