Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 22 February 1998
Day 25
22 February 1998 (Rio Grande National Forest Campground near South Fork
[Highway Springs]; mileage = 28.5) -- A - We were able to ride out of our
campground much easier than we got into it. We started climbing the serious
climb after 5 miles and 8 miles later were at 10,850 feet. It was a SLOW 8
miles! Chris skied for a couple hours, since we were right by a nice ski
area and it was only $33. He seemed to enjoy it. I sat in the lodge and
watched the bikes and watched it start snowing harder and harder. It wasn't
too hard to ride on, just difficult to squeeze the brakes. It slacked off a
lot once we got a couple miles down the mountain. Everything sure got
covered in muck, though. Wow! We found a national forest campground and set
up on the snow. We could see the sun shining a few miles away, but it was
lightly snowing here and is snowing a little heavier by the sound of it
now. X - I had Ramen noodles and melted some snow for H2O. The skiing was
really great, even though it was foggy and cloudy at the top. It was quite
a fun diversion.
