Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 21 February 1998
Day 24
21 February 1998 (NE of Pagosa Springs/East Fork Campground N.F.S.;
mileage = 65.4) -- X - We got up OK and while we were moving the bikes
outside, I noticed I forgot to change April's NEW chain to the proper
length. With that fixed, I noticed that I had a flat rear tire. Even using
the sink, I couldn't find a hole. It did have 8 patches on it! We finally
got rolling after a quick snack. It was sunny with rolling hills. It felt a
lot warmer than 28 degrees F. We got to a hay field and took the "in-town"
route, which was the uphill route. We stopped at the grocery store for
snacks (donuts). Then we rode quite well for a while. After a lot of
climbing, I noticed a spot where I could write "Linco" in the snow. It
turned out to be a pass and we came down for quite a ways. We stopped at a
convenience store for more snacking and saw puppies. As we got to Pagosa
Springs, I noticed a Mexican restaurant. We ate there and it was great. We
were surprised to DROP further into P.S. We then started a light tail
wind-assisted climb into the San Juan national forest. We got to a national
forest campground and pushed the bikes 1 mile up through the mud and snow
to the sites. These sites are really neat, and since this place is kind of
closed, we're very alone. I tried to start a fire, but nothing would burn
-- even with gasoline. I took a walk around in some old snowmobile tracks.
Very, very nice. 1,000 miles from San Diego today.
