Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 12 February 1998
Day 15
12 February 1998 (Grand Canyon; mileage = 28.5) -- A - There was frost on
everything, but we didn't wait for the sun to dry it. We hauled everything
down and hit the hilly road after a snack in the tent. It seemed like
really slow going and we were surprised by that. We were looking for a rest
area indicated on the map, but it never came, so we stopped at the locked
gate of the forest service campground and had our oranges, and then Chris
suggested melting snow for tea. So we did and it was great. Then more
hills, till we finally got raped at the entrance station for $20. 6 more
miles of grinding and we saw IT. We saw it with binoculars and without.
With the camera and without. With our eyes, well anyway ... we lingered
about 1/2 an hour and we'd seen enough. But we have a 7-day pass. Now
what? We found the campground and I went to the store for silicon spray,
and we did a little of that. Then we ate spaghetti and some English
cyclists rode in, Steve and Helen. They're quite funny and they're staying
in our site with us. Right now, we're cold and inhaling silicon spray (and
a little fart). X - Yeah right! Deadly combo.
