Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 03 February 1998
Day 6
03 February 1998 (north of Blythe; mileage = 34) -- X - We got up early
and left right after packing up. It was uncharacteristically cool and
overcast. We rode through irrigated fields on our way to Blythe. The
intermediate little towns were real zeros on the usefulness index. We
finally made it to Blythe and stopped at a city park where RVs could get
free H2O and dump. They were lined up like people at Disneyland. We then
went in search of our restful, luxury campground. OK, that wasn't looking
likely -- ANY campground. We stopped at the grocery store. The wind was
picking up. We stopped for gas. The wind was raging and there was sand and
dust filling the air. We struggled on with a slight head-wind component.
The wind was only a 5-degree head wind, but we were only going 5 or 6 mph.
We decided to turn 90 degrees and go with the wind to a different place.
Wow! We did 17-18 mph to the turn off. There was a county campground that
we weren't expecting. Based on good results in the past, we paid $15. Bad
move. This place isn't very good, except for being right on the river. We
set up the tent and then a wind shelter with the tarp, but their picnic
shelters aren't rainproof, so we retreated to the tent to cook our burritos
and eat. We did both go and take "free" showers. I almost got $7 worth out
of mine!
