8 October 1997 (cloudy but nice; great 2-way tail wind! mileage = 21.5;
Mountain View) -- X - I got out of bed right when I first heard noise from
upstairs. I was able to pack my sleeping bag, make and eat breakfast
(toast) and shave before anyone came down. They still weren't quite ready
by 10 AM? So I finally left first. I rode to Palo Alto and went to the art
supply store. I bought 2 cheap compasses and made map dividers from them.
Next I went to the bike shop (Wheelsmith) to try and learn something. I did
actually (stokers get worse road shock). For being a great bike shop,
they're still pretty lame. Next I went to the mall and to the map store. I
got a good H2Oproof overview map of CA. I rode to the Los Altos library
next where I made copies of the relevant maps from the south atlas. I
stopped at a strange Mexican bar/cafe and had a meal for $7. Back at the
apartment, I organized all of the maps and then marked off and added up
distances. I also looked over the hill climbs. I do NOT want navigational
problems on this ride! Seth and Peter came home after Yusong and we
watched "Sleeping Beauty" (which I've never seen) while Yusong cooked. With
the exception of the singing, it was well done. Then dinner was ready and
Peter wanted to play. So Seth and Yusong took turns hand feeding him while
he played. Must be nice. After dinner, we watched "The English Patient." I
was delighted to actually understand MOST of the Nazi dialog (sorry Susan,
more Nazis). After the movie, I still couldn't remember where I'd seen the
main dude. I had a Seth-like inspiration and got Seth to check for me on
the I-net. Amon Goeth -- "Schindler's List" -- and the main dude in "Quiz
Sow." it's past 2:00 AM!
