Summer 1997 - Yukon to California
Journals - 15 July 1997
Day 5
15 July 1997 (cloudy; cool; very windy from south; mileage = not much;
Alaska Ferry) -- X - We got up a bit late. April went to the post office
and grocery store (and some other stores), while I started putting things
away. When we were packed up, April took a shower. We then rode around a
bit. I left April to hang out at the court house while I rode to the gold
rush cemetery. It was quite out of the way, but there were still HEAPS of
tourists being bused there. We talked to an American R.C.M.P., a.k.a. a
cop, who was interested in bike touring and quite friendly. I thought he
was going to tell us to get our bikes off the grass. We went to a nearby
picnic table by a small playground. We made burritos and then sat around
for a bit. We then went to the ferry terminal to wait for a long time. We
marveled at the loading/unloading of the RVs. I can imagine one of the crew
men getting confused and trying to put the ferry in an RV. They never did
announce when, where and how we should board, but we eventually just rode
down the car ramp. On board, we spent the 1st (short) leg to Haines talking
to Georgina from Bristol, U.K. She is a professional traveler in the
European tradition. At the stop, I went down to the bikes (which is the
only time we can access them) and got sleeping bags and all my super cold
clothes. April slept in the wind-free solarium, but I wanted to sleep out
in the open in the howling wind on deck. While the boat was still, I was
quite hot, and once it got going, generating a serious breeze, it was very
nice. I saw a couple of stars for the first time in months! I had to
retreat when I woke up to rain.
