Summer 1997 - Yukon to California
Journals - 14 July 1997
Day 4
14 July 1997 (cloudy; windy; cool; mileage = 0; Skagway, AK) -- X - We
slept in a bit. We got up and read a bit and we finished our milk and
Lucky Charms. We covered and locked the bikes and walked into town. We
walked to the ferry terminal and got our ticket. We then went to the main
tourist area. We went into a real yucky touristy store that was real
crowded. I had to go and wait outside where I had a pleasant conversation
with Jim from Vancouver who had ridden his bike from Fairbanks to Cordova.
I was trying to convince him to ride up the White Pass. I think he was low
on time, so he'll be riding the head-wind way like we did. April bought an
Ulu knife and some earrings and other stuff. We looked in many shops that
had really expensive stuff in them. We checked out a restaurant, but the
going rate could have sustained us for a week in Saskatchewan. We went to
the grocery store and bought some accessories for the spaghetti we had
brought from White Horse. We checked out the Chilkoot Trail Center and saw
the park service movie about the gold rush boom. Back to camp. We ate our
spaghetti and then wrote letters and post cards. I read some German words
and April read her book.
