Day 90 - Liard Hot Springs, B.C.

29 June 1997 (good temp; rainy; cloudy; windy; mileage = 72.1) -- X - We got up and packed and while I was getting H2O, an RVer's dog ran FULL-BLAST into my left knee. It was a VERY stupid dog, but it left me with a sore leg. We left before the Swiss, but they caught us on the big climb while we were resting on top. It was rainy and yucky to climb mountains, but that's what we did. The Swiss were struggling in the nasty weather and opted to eat at a restaurant at the bottom of the descent. They let us put our 4 bikes in the garage and to everybody's surprise, the owners were Swiss! We had GREAT food and had an awesome burger. These Swiss sure are good cooks. We left them behind in medium rain. Instead of a nice flat riverbed road, it was very hilly as the rivers cut through the road, making alluvial fan tails. Very tough. We also had a head wind. We slogged through it all with very few breaks (Swiss-style). I took a break when it stopped raining to ditch rain gear and the road flattened for a while. But after 20 km or so, it was back to hills. Apparently, there are quite a few Swiss in the Muncho Lake area. They must be attracted by the mountains. The lake was very pretty despite the clouds and fog and rain. When we got to Laird, we checked all 3 campgrounds before we found our Swiss friends. They already had the tarp shelter up (good work, Hanspeter). We had a good meal of stew and oatmeal. Planned tomorrow's attack and chatted with the Swiss. We put our food in the restaurant here and off to bed at a good time ~ 21:00. We hear reports of 2 older men riding bicycles on the Alcan -- yup, they're Swiss!
