Day 64 - Strasbourg, Sask.

3 June 1997 (sunny; hot; winds [~8:00 to ~16:00]; mileage = 34.1) -- The alarm went off and I was still totally out of it, but April heard it and woke me up. She was apparently not looking forward to strong head winds either. We got up and got rolling by 4:45. We stopped at an entrance to a picnic area, but it was down a hill so we stayed there and didn't go in. We hadn't seen traffic almost all morning, but while we ate snacks there, 3 vehicles went into the picnic area and 1 (different) left! We watched the birds nesting in the gate and saw far-off pelicans fly by. We then proceeded to the last mountain-house which was a Hudson & Bay Company outpost (recreated on the site of the original). We took a look around there. Very interesting, even though the specific buildings weren't open for the summer yet. Then we ploughed, no plodded through the wind to a town called Strasbourg. We were checking for camping/grocery when I saw a cool H.P.V. in front of the grocery store. While I was marveling at it, a guy came out and said he owned it and invited us for coffee across the street. Such an offer. His name's Roger and his friend's name is Elanor. We all had coffee and we found out that he ran the co-op food store. They left and we had lunch there (cheeseburgers). This coffee shop charged for coffee by the hour! We then went to the co-op store and bought food. Roger offered to let us drive the H.P.V., which we did. What a blast! I have to have one. We went to a bakery and bought a pie and some yummy stuff. I asked Roger where he thought we could camp and he gave the good answer of his back yard. I took a quick shower in his house which was very nice. I washed clothes in his back yard. We read his mtn. bike mags. We petted his Manx cat and chatted at length with his neighbor, Jim. Then we had dinner with him, Elanor and her mother, Crystal, who was German and had a German accent and rode a 3-wheel bike around. She was very interested in us. So we ate a lot and entertained with stories of adventure. Very excellent all around.
