Day 36 - Near Traverse City, MI
6 May 1997 (nice and sunny; still a bit cool; good winds; mileage = 33.5)
-- X - We slept in a bit this morning, too, knowing that we didn't have a
long day planned. I was also hoping to put the tent away dry. I could see
that it was sunny out, but we were in morning shade. We heard voices and
noises far off so we decided to get up and get going. It was tricky getting
packed up and avoiding the forest and deer poop nearby. When we did get
going, we had a nasty cross wind which didn't bother us since I knew we
would turn with it soon. We encountered some actual hills near Benzonia. We
made a shortcut to make our eastward turn and came upon an elk farm. They
were very neat and we were quite close to them. We stopped at a food store
in Honor, MI to buy milk and perishables. We then rode to a state forest
campsite which is a lot more Spartan than the state park's sites, yet they
still want $6. Give me a break. (*Picture-hand out for $ [In Michigan, they
like to give directions and talk about the state in general as an
analogously-shaped mitten or hand. Here's my impression of it.]) We ate
lunch there. The whole place was empty. After lunch, we had a SUPER tail
wind that took us very close to Traverse City. We spent over an hour trying
to find a good site in the "state forest." Looks like a damn suburb to me.
We finally found a marginal site and we relaxed in the sunshine for a few
hours before eating pb&j and pitching the tent. So far, it's OK.
