Spring 1997 - Cincinnati to Yukon

Day 31 - Lowell State Game Area, MI
1 May 1997 (rain early; cold; windy; mileage = 0) -- X - Shortly after
getting in the tent last night, it started to rain. We decided to skip our
cooked dinner and get right to sleep. I read for a while. This morning, we
woke up to rain and high winds and freezing cold. The winds seemed to be
from the northwest very strong. We decided to call it a rest day. The rain
finally let up, but the winds were even stronger then earlier. We spent the
first half of the day reading, resting, eating and other tent-bound
activities. The sun did make an appearance, but it was still below 40
degrees and very windy. We each made an out-of-tent excursion.
A - It thunder stormed even last night. A branch fell on our tent with a
scary thud while we were sleeping. A short time ago, we heard a dog bark
very near. Chris got out and saw a guy with a gun off in the distance.
Hopefully, he saw us and went off the other way. I was going to go out and
"use the facilities," but the urge passed suddenly! We just now heard
rapid-fire shots -- hopefully quite a distance away. The wind makes it a
little difficult to judge that.
I'm ready to do something tomorrow. It's a little boring being confined to
the tent. The yellowness of it begins to make my eyes hurt. It's too windy
out to want to stay out for long, though. I set up a log of our distance
and dollars spent each day, so we can see how many $ per mile we are
spending. That seems a decent measure of how we're doing. We deserve more
pampering if we've done the miles to earn it! We earned 0 today!
