Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati

Day 42
11 March 1998 (Park Hills and Rosener's; mileage = 57.6 - X; 56.7 - A) --
X - We got up at a good time and to prepare for being stranded by the
ongoing blizzard, I was going to go grocery shopping. I got as far as the
post office (50 feet away) when I noticed my rear tire was flat. I had
already added another patch to the 2 on the front from last night! So back
to the room, fixed that, onto grocery shopping. The weather was very
strange AND horrible today -- low 20s and oscillating sunshine and heavy
snowstorms every 15 minutes! We finally left around 10:45. As we got into
the Mark Twain National Forest, the traffic cooled off. Good thing, since
there were no shoulders. We had an incident with a "running dog" who I
dragged to its house and tied up. Then April had a flat! I carried the
bike about 100 M to the nearest driveway (NO shoulders!). After a long day
of frigid hill climbing, we got to Potosi and had lunch at McD's. We talked
to an interested old guy who knew the area very well. He recommended a
good, cheap motel. We then set out on a busy road with a terrible shoulder
to Park Hills. This former lead-producing town reminded me of Norwood. We
finally got to the motel and were glad to be warm. April has pulled off her
worn-looking rear tire to check for slow leaks carefully.
