Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 09 March 1998
Day 40
09 March 1998 (5 miles east of Iberia, Missouri; mileage = 42) -- X - We
got up and packed our dry stuff. The bikes and bungees were very frozen.
Very soon after we left, a police wanker stopped us and told us to
"disappear." He said that the roads weren't going to get any better and
that we were a hazard -- no shit! -- hazard like autos? I was quite pissed
off and I moved to the other side of the road and started walking. About a
mile later, a newspaper reporter, Joy(ce) was waiting to interview me. This
was very gratifying, since her next interview was the police chief. At the
town line, we mounted up and rode out. It was slushy, but the wide shoulder
was 100% safe. We had to stop to remove ice from our derailleurs and
brakes. It was a slushy mess alright. After a cross-windy ride to Osage
Beach (which is going for the Myrtle Beach look), we ate at McD's, then to
the laundry. I went across the street to the unexpected bike shop to put
some air in my ego. By this time, the roads were clear and dry and it was
sunny, if cold. We turned onto 42 for a tail wind and rode HILLY, windy
roads to Iberia. April bought sandwich stuff for dinner and we started
looking for a site. I had a cold-call rejection and several no homes before
landing this nice spot with a bike stable!
