Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati
Journals - 19 February 1998
Day 22
19 February 1998 (Mancos, Colorado; mileage = 37.2) -- X - We had a nice,
quiet night on the range. We managed to drag everything back up to the road
without getting a flat. The riding was extremely tough, due to a strong,
full head wind, a climb, and 20 degrees F. At least it was sunny. The
scenery was nice and some horses ran with us for a while. We stopped for
snacks to celebrate getting out of Injun country. Yea!! We pressed on into
Cortez. We went to the visitor center, which was very helpful and nice. We
went to the grocery store and bought food, had corn dogs for lunch, and got
our pix developed. Back on the road, we had to stop and ditch boots, since
it had gotten so warm. We stopped also at an odd rest area with a gate.
After the Mesa Verde turn off, we stopped in an RV park. It was mud and
slush. The woman was going to give me a special deal of $18!! Holy shit! I
was shocked. A bit later, I noticed that my rear tire was worn. We managed
to make it through this town without a flat. At the end of town, there was
a miraculous Lion's camping area. Grass! Free! Wow! I replaced my tire with
an emergency spare. An interested guy came and talked to us -- asking very
intelligent questions. He seemed to really respect our experience. Bout
time! We pitched the tent and cooked chili and mac and cheese and ??? Very
nice.
