Winter 1998 - San Diego to Cincinnati

Day 10
07 February 1998 (Route 66 north of Kingman by RR tracks; mileage = 51) --
X - We got up a bit late, but it didn't matter since we were destined to
wait around for the tent to dry. I took a little walk up a near hill to see
our course for the day. When we finally got packed up, we headed out. We
got to I-40 and found signs saying "Bicyclists use shoulder only" -- no
problem. We had a decent ride in the morning, stopping at a very civilized
rest stop -- our first since North Dakota. We pressed on. The next exit
had a huge, geodesic-sphere house (yucca, etc.). We were pretty tired when
we finally made it to the truck stop on Route 66. We ate a late lunch there
and then pressed onward and upward to Kingman. Right away, I had a
slow-leak rear tire. We rode through town to the Flying "3" truck stop
here. We took fabulous showers for free. The truckers get shower coupons
for filling up. Some friendly, interested ones gave us each one. What a
great shower -- towels and everything. Next, we scoured through Kmart
unsuccessfully for silicon spray. Then we stopped at the grocery store for
food and H2O. Then off. It was getting dark. Just outside of town, past the
airport, we found a big, grassy field. At the far side was RR tracks. We
set up near the tracks and cooked and ate stew in the tent. The trains are
very loud!
