10 October 1997 (rainy in AM! wow! cloudy; mileage = 0; Mountain View) --
X - Again I tried to sleep in as long as I could. I finally got up at 9:00.
I ate toast and was busy making a calendar when the Rogers came down. I
think they left at 10:15 or so. Wow. Peter watched most of "Sleeping
Beauty" again. Once they were gone and I had finished my calendar, I got
started on my bike. I cleaned the chain and sprockets and put the new chain
on (odometer 7,294 miles). I also discovered that the Delta/Aztec cables
were getting themselves gummed up. What a hoax. 4 brand new-WD40'd cables
are better than these! Oh well. Since it was raining (pretty good), I
didn't want to instantly foul my transmission, so I walked to downtown
Mountain View. I walked around a bookstore that seemed to be associated
with SRF. I walked around other stores there being
careful to not want to buy anything. I found a Mexican restaurant that I'd
overlooked. It was deserted when I went in. It was overpriced and not
great. There are about 20 Asian restaurants on this strip, however, and
several Asian markets. What's the deal? So I came back and took a nap. When
I woke up, I studied German for a long time and made good progress. When
the crew returned, Peter was shouting constantly and I went to his room to
continue my studying. Seth and I looked for stuff on the web -- him, dining
room chairs; me, a tandem. No luck, but some interesting things like a
great quote by a fellow traveler. Yusong made good fried rice. I designed a
model of my dome wood block set. It turned out well. Finally, after several
shifts, Peter was out. And now I can go to bed (12:48 AM). "Who needs a job
when you have a life?"
