5 October 1997 (perfect! mileage = 18.1; Stanford/Palo Alto/Mountain View) -- X - We were all up at around 9:30, which was pretty good considering our late night. We ate breakfast and gave 95% of all of our collective attention to Peter. Finally, it was time for his piano lesson, and I was all alone for some peace and quiet. Actually, before the piano lesson, I was left to baby-sit while Seth and Yusong went to look at a futon they saw advertised in the paper. That was tiring. Once I was alone, I started my inventory of gear. While putting grease on the rusting Swiss-tech tool, I was interrupted by the phone (which I was supposed to answer). It was Seth saying to meet him in Palo Alto at the mall McD's. I got ready and left so quickly that I forgot to put the cap on the Phil grease and now it's lost. I made good time to the mall, but spent a long time searching for the McD's. It was deeply hidden in an open air mall. I had a chicken sandwich. Peter was wearing his new knight costume. We then went to the travel bookstore which was pretty neat. But they had all but German micro dictionaries and no southern California atlas! Then Seth and I rode bikes (he brought his) to the Rodin area in Stanford. Yusong and Peter caught up in the car. It was 4 pieces called the ??? of Calais. Not very inspirational to me. The Thinker is there, too (one of many, I suppose). We checked out the church, etc. I bought my atlas at the Stanford bookstore which seemed to have no textbooks! It was like Barnes & Noble. Then Seth and I rode to his work. Again we waited for Yusong in the car. I saw Seth's office and his work. Then Seth and I rode home on very pleasant side streets. I had to baby-sit again as Seth and Yusong went and got the futon. I helped carry it in, set it up and rearrange things. We had spaghetti for dinner and Peter was especially silly (obnoxious perhaps). They decided to put his brain on ice using a technique that I haven't seen here yet -- TV. It was some wretched, horribly bad cartoon. I went back to the garage and continued my inventory. I'm hoping for an earlier night tonight.
