23 September 1997 (very nice; lucky! no head winds or bad heat! mileage =
101.2; McKerricher) -- X - I got up nice and early and was struggling to
get past Robert's truck and the bushes by 5:30. I felt like shit. My
stomach felt so bad, I couldn't THINK of eating. The riding was nice early
on in the dark. I used a glow stick which seemed to do well. I took Canyon,
instead of Dutcher Creek, and got lost a bit. But it turns out I wasn't
much off course. At the top of the big climb past Cloverdale, I had a
sharp-stone flat. While I was patching it, a guy offered me a ride to the
coast. Since I feel like a car ride started this illness, I said no thanks.
I stopped at the country park before Hendy Woods to check it out. I managed
to drink some Rade. The next stop was for lunch. Ha! 1 yogurt. This was at
the Demo Forest. There was a bookmobile there. Then, down to the Navarro
River. Very nice scenery. Then along the foggy coast to Ft. Bragg. I
stopped at the south end of town at a neat grocery that sells dented cans
and rejects. Then on the McKerricher. Seeing HP and Susan was the best
medicine for my stomach. I was actually semi-hungry. Good thing, too, since
they had bought stuff for Mexican food with me in mind. That was great. So
I talked to them and some of the 7 sets of bikers (Deb and Darrell from
Calgary), etc. Nice shower. Nice sleep.
