Day 51 - Pelican Lake, MN

21 May 1997 (sunny! mostly sunny! light winds! cool but pleasant! mileage = 38.7) -- X - When we woke up this morning, we felt wet and clammy. Yuck. When I got out of the tent, I saw why. Lots of fog and mist rising off the Mississippi River. There was also frost on our tent (which was there in the afternoon!). We packed up and took off. We headed the right direction on dirt roads that we didn't know everything about. It followed the M. River and was quite scenic. April had a small wipe out in a sandy spot, but mostly, the dirt roads are OK. We stopped and checked out an abandoned one-room house and then ate breakfast in a nearby field which was very pretty since the leaves on the trees were out! And there were no clouds in the sky. Very fine. Then we set out again for Pelican Lake. When we got there, there was a couple of yuppie types going fishing, but no pelicans. We think that the lake may just be shaped like one. Shortly after that visit, we decided to check out a campground since we were in serious need of a shower. It was $15 which didn't thrill me too much, but we needed it. We ate burritos for lunch and then started cleaning, drying and organizing. We have been waiting for a nice day to do some of these chores for weeks! I washed my hair outside just to see if my skull would crack in the ice water, but it didn't (I don't think). We took marathon showers and washed our clothes in the shower. We hung our clothes up to dry, but used the hand dryers to finish off the job. April fixed some sewing projects. We cleaned a lot of our stuff and aired out the rest. In the evening, I noticed April's bike had a flat on the back. I patched it, but while I was inflating it, the valve stem went bad. Very unnerving. Also, I noticed the tire was not looking too good near the bead. We'll have to watch that. We did not go through a single town today! Skunk sighting.
