Spring 1997 - Cincinnati to Yukon

Day 38 - Past Charlevoix, MI
8 May 1997 (rainy; misty; cloudy; sunny; mileage = 54.4) -- X - We slept
in a bit in the motel. We finally got up and started packing. We did some
good reorganizing. We had our complimentary coffee and donuts from the
lobby. We kept getting calls from the maids -- are you gone yet? We were
finally rolling at 11:00. It was lightly raining. We got on 31, which had a
lot more traffic and trouble than I expected. Eventually, it cleared out.
We cranked in a great tail wind. We had done 47.5 miles by 15:00! Quite
good. By the time we got to Charlevoix, the clouds were clearing and
finally the sun came out. We stopped in a grocery store and I bought some
dinner enhancements -- sour cream, milk, cheese, etc. As we were leaving
town, we found an old railroad bed that broke away from the main road. We
took that (which was rough going) till we thought we were out of
sight/mind. Wouldn't you know it, the property near us was a gun club and
we heard shots. Then later, we heard kids and fireworks. I went to check on
that action, and I got to see them drive away. We had a good dinner of
chili and cheese and sour cream dip on tortilla chips. Then I worked on a
bathing experiment. I actually used our plastic bin as a wash basin and
washed off in the vestibule (out of wind and sight) on a plastic sheet.
This seems to have worked quite well. I think April's annoyed that we
didn't set her up, too, but it was an experiment! If my feeling of
non-sliminess holds fast, tomorrow we'll both be working on the technique.
Sliminess is our #1 problem now.
