Dachau, Germany

Dachau, Germany 16 April 1999
I noticed Dachau on my map and the name sort of rang a bell. I couldn't exactly for certain remember if it was what I thought it was, but as I sat in a quaint cafe reading my newly purchased map book, it seemed like a very pleasant place. But as I left town, I came to a cross roads. I didn't have a detailed map of this area and I was just winging it. I impulsively took doubled back to take a turn that I originally passed up. And there it was - a bona fide Nazi death camp. Whoa. That's a seriously heavy tourist attraction if ever there was one. I was thinking that this may be the most popular tourist attraction of which the locals are not proud, anywhere in the world. Again I didn't want to leave my bike lying around unattended and I was in my self-imposed hurry mode, so I didn't stick around for long. But I did get to ride around the main grounds of the place. One thing that struck me as very interesting and significant is the proximity to Munich. Dachau is not some isolated little town in the middle of nowhere. It is really a suburb of Munich. I think it is a bit misleading to think of it as the Dachau concentration camp. I think it would be more accurate to think of it as the Munich camp.
