Day 56
4 September 1997 (cloudy; sunny; mileage = 0; New Brighton SB) -- A - Some
obnoxiously loud, drunk people woke us all up around 4:30 AM. A cop
eventually came and chased them away -- several times. We did go back to
sleep finally. We figured D&N would get up and start packing if they wanted
to leave because of that and they didn't -- so we stayed in the tent until
about 9. As it turned out, they wanted to move to a park a few miles away,
but that would be stupid. Chris had been talking to the Germans who had
gotten ripped off buying a used BMW here. It went kaput and now they are
hitching or taking a bus. Chris offered our bikes to them for the day and
they accepted. They had tried to rent bikes and they were very expensive.
D&N putzed around for a long time and then rode to Santa Cruz for the rest
of the day. Chris and I looked at the German cycling magazine and looked at
the map. Riding the same pace with D&N is becoming a bit tedious.
We informed them of these fears, but they will try anyway. The
Germans (Juliana and Matais) got back a little after sunset. They were very
thankful and brought us a bottle of wine. We didn't drink any but D&N
did. It's 9:42 now and everyone is still out there talking
and I fear we will have a late start tomorrow because of this.
I now regret that I got the flight for the same time they leave. I want
stay a bit longer so Chris and I can have fun before I leave. This makes me
sad.
