Summer 1997 - Yukon to California
Journals - 2 August 1997
Day 23
2 August 1997 (sunny! nice in shade; mileage = 57.8; Castlerock RV
Campground) -- X - We got up at our target time (6:00) and were rolling
after breakfast at ~ 7:00. We enjoyed some great riding in the long
shadows. We rode very well for about 16 miles when we got to a town called
Centralia. It looked like generic America with one house standing out
incredibly. It was covered completely in artwork made almost entirely of
trash and mostly styrofoam. I stopped to admire it and its owner came out
and gave us the grand tour. This guy was a nutcase and I had only the
highest respect for him. He was, as I aspire to be, a cool nutcase. Wow!
What a place. He liked us well enough to go over the normal 5-minute tour.
Very cool. Very unusual and wonderful. It made everything else look boring.
We got to Winlock and for the second day in a row, I saw a sign asking for
info on an unsolved murder in that (respective) town. I went into a library
and borrowed their WA Atlas. The woman was suspicious, but when she learned
of our travels, she was very impressed, a la the Plains folk. We ate lunch
there and headed out. It was very hot in the sun, but OK in the shade. We
could see Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Ranier very clearly on the horizon. We got
to our campsite. We went a bit farther to an RV park which had a very nice
spot for us. We took showers, made a Swiss-style pasta meal and packed up
for the night. Oh ya -- our campsite neighbors -- Swiss!
