Summer 1997 - Yukon to California
Journals - 18 July 1997
Day 8
18 July 1997 (mileage = 3.2; Port Hardy, B.C.) -- A - Don's yard was
rather lumpy and the tent went up and down in strange directions. The foot
of one side and the head on the other were both large holes. This made
sleeping interesting. We got up and out quickly and got to the ferry in
just a couple of minutes. It was tricky finding a place to put the bikes
among the tightly packed vehicles, but we finally did. The solarium on this
boat wasn't as large, so it was cooler to sit in. We managed to have
breakfast up there, but once we both had gone for an exploratory stroll
around, we decided it seemed much colder outside. We went inside to the
cafeteria where they were just starting bingo. It was non-smoking and
non-threatening, so we played. This boat was about half-filled with
German-speaking people. The activity-director girls even spoke German and
English. Some of the announcements were done in German, also. It seemed
very strange to us, but very normal for this ferry. Their book store had a
couple of books in German. We never did quite figure out why. After bingo,
we vacated the cafeteria for the lunch crowd's benefit. We went up to the
observation lounge and lounged at a table there. We ate a bunch of junk and
by the time the boat started hitting some wavy areas, I was feeling
seasick. We went outside and watched the full moon and lots of stars (WOW!
it's been a long time!) as we pulled in to port. We escaped very quickly
and Chris went into the terminal to inquire about camping. They sent us
here and we pitched the tent in the dark. It seemed so weird! A very nice
spot, though. There was already a tent here and a van over to the side.
