For all the prestige and expense surrounding powerful processors, here’s a scene you don’t see very often.
That is an htop
display of all 6 cores of my CPU running at 100%.
(Actually, you do see this all the time, but it’s usually a runaway
browser window or some other horrific bloatware.)
Right now I am waiting on some software I wrote which is running
all cores full throttle. Even though I’m
pretty experienced at such things, it turns
out to be depressingly rare when all cores of a home computer are used
for calculating something you really want to calculate. I think this
is especially true now when it seems like people with really serious
computational problems have all gone to GPUs.
What requires such serious computational firepower? I’m detecting vehicles in dashcam video. I mention that as a reminder that such an easy task for humans is far from easy for computers.
